6-3-11....Nature of things

Fact of the matter is....Any day is a good day to fish....Good weather or not...Unfortunetly we cannot change or adjust the weather...just our attitudes towards it...I am guilty like most of looking outside, seeing dark clouds, too much wind, a little rain, too much sun, bluebird skies...and thinking, man I just should just hit snooze, I'm not going to catch any fish today...We all have excuses...they match that special part of our anatomy where a majority of people that call themselves "anglers" speak from....Truth be told...I didn't want to get out of bed today. It had nothing to do with not being excited to wet a line, I looked outside and saw wind....Lots of wind...Mother Nature has once again thrown a wrench at our monkey and went from 90 to 50 degrees in a day...No notice, no warning, no gradual decline...just a cold slap in the face....The goal this morning was to catch carp...They just finished spawning a day or so ago, they should be hungry after all that rough housing....Well, there wasn't a fish in sight...Not one plume, not one ripple...notta...Wanna know why?....They woke up, felt the temp, saw the wind and hit the snooze button...That simple...and I don't blame them....

So we went to the resevoir instead, thinking panfish and some bass...always a good time.....The people that I run into up there sometimes frighten me in regards to the future of mankind. It's not that they are necessarily bad people, they are just dim witted. Much like Bigfoot, fly fisherman are rare sightings there. Whenever the worm drowners or spin gear heads see one of us, the look in horror and curiousity...then they approach slowly with caution...as if we will bite..."ummm...excuse me sir...what exactly are you trying to catch with that thing...the trout are over there..."...At this point I usually turn and look at them in utter surprise, jaw gaped and if I can, I try to hang a little drool out of the corner of my mouth to add effect.. "oh my gosh...I had no idea....You mean I can only catch trout with this here buggy whip....golly...I must have it all wrong...." I don't blame them for their lack of understanding...I suppose the stigma associated with fly fishing still lies in the hands of those trout guys....That's ok with me...It seems as though my county is done evolving, so I will have to continue to deal with the Geico spokespeople...

It is a good place to fish actually, the bass and panfish can actually be of significant size...We had a tough time for sure today...The weather pushed them down....We managed to bring up a couple....

Dustin's smallie...and yes, that is a Sili Craw hanging out of it's mouth...

My two hookups for the day....

Remember....get out and fish, no excuses....It's so easy, even a caveman can do it...

  2. I got asked once if my rod tube was an explosive of some kind. Caveman? Heck yeah. I like being one of the weirdos

    Great post!

  3. Most of the locals in my area think my rod case is a rifle. Living in a ghetto and all, I haven't corrected their mistake. Better to be different, a spinning rod might make me look vulnerable.

  5. Very nice post. I think the false perceptions of the "buggy whip" may be even worse in my part of the country. "You can't fly fish for bass... can you?"

  6. Jay I hear that all the time...what do you mean you use a fly rod for that...funny...I use a fly rod for every species I target....I thing a majority of people just don't get it...but that's ok...we don't want those fish to get too used to our flies...
