Another trip to the Salmon River today...Flew solo today....Made it to Altmar as the temps rose to a balmy 27 degrees...It promptly began snowing upon exiting my vehicle...Ahhhh...Steelhead happiness. Now I don't usually get too philosophical when I write these blogs, but I have to say...There is something very beautiful, poetic and mesmerising watching the sun come up from your rear view mirror, rocking some classics on your way to a winter fishing destination. Normally I do not go out in the cold unless forced by necessity, but I have to say, when I was standing in the 41 degree river up to my hips, not being able to feel my toes with the snow coming down so hard that I couldn't even see the bank...I though WOW...I can't wait to do this again next weekend...

It was a great day...I had nine hookups altogether...The first fish, a huge male steelie, fought mighty for about 10 minutes before I could bring him close. A friendly angler offered a netting assist, I gladly accepted. As he went for the fish, something went wrong and he actually missed and pulled the fly from the buck's face...I watched as the biggest steelie of my short 5 trip career drifted back into the cold abyss. I had a few not so solid hookups that shook free, two break offs and these two beautiful browns...Lots of cold faces out there today...Tight lines and screaming reels....

I had an amazing time at the Fly Tying Symposium in NJ this year. It was my first time tying there. I met a ton of great people, talented tyers and fish heads from across the land. I can't wait to do it again....I feel fresh and inspired from the exciting, limit pushing fly tying being done. People that don't see flies as art are missing out on some terrific stuff.

Went to the Salmon River Sunday with a couple of friends...People were complaining about low water flows and sunny skies...The hot spots were packed with anglers...We searched out areas that were empty...The lower end of the river had less pressure...We had a fun day..I think people take all of this way to seriously..Fishing is about being outside, sharing some laughs with friends, enjoying and being part of something that is larger than ourselves...I lose track of things when I fish...All is forgotten and peaceful...People get too angry when they don't catch fish...Of course catching fish is a part of the experience...But it shouldn't be the end all be all of the day..

We did get into some fish though...I landed a big salmon....I also hooked one of the largest browns I have ever seen...It took a screaming run into my backing, shot up into the air like a torpedo and broke my 6lb tippet....Albert hooked into a nice steelhead that broke him off as well...Johnny landed a beautiful giant male steelhead...I had to practically bear hug him to get him out of the water...When he went to remove the hook the fish went crazy one more time, stabbing me in the hand with the hook and me dropping the fish into the river....No pic was taken...He had a couple other hookups that managed to get off....

That is fishing....That's why we don't call it catching....The tug is the drug...

Took my co-worker to the Salmon River Sunday...He had never experienced this type of fishing before....The day started chilly...27 degrees...Warmed up to about 40...We fished like madmen..He described fishing with me as "like running a marathon..." What can I say...It's the on foot equivalent to bass boats running and gunning...If it's not producing...move on....The fishing was difficult to say the least...I had one hook up that ran me out into backing then broke me off as soon as I put a little pressure on it...It headed for the rapids on it's first run...Lasted a total of 3 seconds...But it put a smile on my face, bent my rod, made my reel scream and made the day...My buddy was able to see the remainder of the lingering salmon swimming and jumping past him...Dead fish floating downstream and carcasses rotting in the banks....The day ended with me slipping and falling into the water head first....A refreshing 46 degree bath....Ahhh...At least it was the end of the day...Has anyone ever tried changing in a port a potty? Clark Kent makes a telephone booth look easy...I would love to see him try a port a potty....I thought I was going to tip it over getting out of my wet clothes...This Sunday brings another shot at a hook up....Tight lines and screaming reels....

Instead of Trick or Treating I decided like all good fly fishing addicts to go fishing instead....I met up with a friend by the name Brian Price out of Vermont. He and a few of his buddies had spent a few days up north chasing steel and big bows...These gentlemen were beyond helpful, insightful and knowledgeable when it came to this new game I am playing. They welcomed me into their group and aided in my first big rainbow trout being landed...Many thanks to them all....

I'm already thinking about next week....Tight lines and screaming reels
